Geno has always been the one to ask about outdoor activities, and this time Geno and the more hard-core members of the Geno gang joined the 2012 Hike for Freedom. Taking approximately 8 hours, the hike was from Zhangmutou Forest Park to Qingxi Dawang Mountain Forest Park.
The Dongguan Live team was joined by Geno and his friends, Hugo, John, Monica and Shawn. Zhangmutou is on the outskirts of Dongguan, far from the city centre, so most hikers from outside Dongguan arrived the night before and spent the night. Beginning at 6am, the hike to Qingxi town was well under way by the time our team arrived at 8am. More than 6,000 people were participating in the activity, setting an event record. Some participants were even dressed in cosplay to liven up the day, some in traditional Han-style clothing, army uniforms, and so on. One hiker was even carrying a 40kg backpack, and others carried buckets of mineral water.
Shawn was surprised by the passion with which the local Dongguanese took to the hike; “I never knew hiking in Dongguan was so popular. Those staying at home should come and join us.” John said: “Hiking and biking are very good activities for the weekend. Especially in Dongguan, the city actually has lots of sightseeing locales, historical alleys and beautiful scenery. It’s cool to hike in Dongguan.”
