Chang Xing, a 14-year-old girl from Shenzhen, took home the first-place prize on May 6 in the classical category at the 27th International Piano and Orchestra Competition and the Best Beethoven Interpretation Award in Cantu, Italy, which is the sixth top international award she has won in the past two years.

Chang won the prize for her performance of Beethoven’s “Concerto No.2 in E Flat Minor,” which she had practiced for one year.

She also had the opportunity to perform a recital held by the competition organizer the following day at the Como Social Theater in Como, Italy.

The piano and orchestra competition, first organized in 1990, is an event with worldwide influence.

According to Chang, she felt that she truly understood what Beethoven hoped to express in the piano piece during the competition. “I think Beethoven created in his mind a virtual world which was not on earth but in heaven. The deceased emperor of music is depicting the ups and downs of his life in a solemn tone. It is real perfection,” she said.

Born in 2002, Chang began learning piano at 4 and a half years old. At the age of 10, she was named the president of the jury for an international piano competition. At 11, she had her first solo concert. In 2016, at the age of only 14, she became the youngest student to be admitted to the Piano Department of the Milan Conservatory.

Even with all her oustanding achievements she is just like any other girl her age. Her hobbies include writing and she is a fan of cartoons.

Chang has her own understanding of piano practice. She thinks that constant practice is a prerequisite for a pianist. However, all practice and no reflection in her opinion makes for a dull pianist. In her words, “Only if one sees more and experiences more, can the piano pieces he or she plays be enriched.”

Chang is set to perform solo concerts at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou on June 28 and Shenzhen Concert Hall on July 9.
