The annual Labor-Selling Festival kicked off in Dongkeng Township of Dongguan City on 10th March. Thousands of people tried to soak each other to bring luck for the whole year despite of the cold and rainy weather.

The festival dates back to the Ming Dynasty (which reigned from 1368-1644). Every second day of lunar February, peasants from Dongkeng and nearby gathered in Dongkeng Village hopeful for ploughing and other manual labor jobs. If chosen by an employer, the employee would be drenched with water, as some form of camaraderie. This practice gradually evolved into a local custom, famous for its name Mai Shen (selling oneself) Festival.

Over time, this practice matured into what became known as the "Labor-Selling Festival". As general living standards improved, the festival turned into the "Turning-Over Festival" and most recently the "Water-Splashing Festival" as a way to celebrate a good and happy life.
