Walmart China signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with Dongguan Municipal Government On 19th February, 2016.

On 19th February, Walmart China signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with Dongguan Municipal Government. Walmart entered Dongguan in 1997, and has opened 13 stores across downtown Dongguan, Humen, Chang'an, Fenggang, Dalang and several other locations. It has created nearly 10,000 direct and indirect job opportunities. Over the next 5 years, Walmart plans to build an additional eight stores and one Sam's Club in Dongguan. Also during this time, Walmart China will establish China's biggest cold-chain logistics distribution centre in Dongguan, which will serve all its associates in South China. The distribution centre is expected to create over 3,000 job opportunities.

Since December 2015, the Walmart mobile shopping APP has included the 13 Walmart stores in Dongguan, enabling residents in Dongguan to purchase goods online and engage with customer services. Walmart will continue to invest in Dongguan and introduce the Sam's Club stores across the city. This year, Dongguan's 14th Walmart store will be opened in Shilong Town, which will have a lease area nearly twice the area of the Walmart supermarket itself to accommodate cinemas, restaurants, and retail boutiques. This has been designed to provide customers with a one-stop shopping experience.

Sean Clarke, President and CEO of Walmart China, said: "Dongguan is a city with the largest number of Walmart shops among the prefecture-level cities. We are very optimistic about the market in Dongguan and Walmart will continue to invest in Dongguan." According to the memorandum, the two sides will develop close cooperation in business investment, local procurement, food safety, environmental protection and an assortment of other agendas.

According to Sean Clarke, Dongguan is also a very important commodity procurement market for Walmart, especially as the clothing, footwear, toys and other local high-quality products sourced in Dongguan are popular with Walmart customers nationwide. Walmart's "Sustainable Development 360 Strategy" highly fits Dongguan's ecological city objectives. In the past four years, Walmarthas launched upgrade projects in six stores in the city, including the adoption of energy saving measures.
